DJ Equipment: Turntables, Headphones, Sound Systems, Lighting And DJ Mixers

Individuals who have had the pleasure of witnessing a DJ competition are fully aware that DJing has become an art form. Turntablists match beats and mix tracks seamlessly and with mesmerizing speed. Fans of hip-hop have long recognized the DJ's contribution to the genre in the same way rock fans appreciate guitar virtuosos, such as Clapton. The turntablist is capable of being an entire band with the skilled use of their DJ equipment. Many who have seen DJs in action often question themselves as to whether or not they could spin if they possessed DJ equipment. It is not as though they would have to learn to read sheet music. However, no one is crazy enough to claim that acquiring such skills is easy, but with the proper DJ equipment, anyone can learn the basics.

Numerous DJ equipment kits exist for beginners. DJ turntable packages usually come equipped with two turntables, a mixer and a set of headphones. Packaged DJ equipment with these components range in price from around $300 to $700. One website, the-dj-equipment-guide.com, suggests building a DJ equipment set from superior, individual, components for less than $600. Should one opt for the convenience of a DJ equipment kit, he or she will want to be prepared to replace the kits headphones. They will want to purchase lightweight headphones that completely cover the ears.

Other considerations for a basic DJ equipment set are additional needles and slip pads for the turntables. The components that come with the packaged kit, or the build-it-yourself-set, are enough for anyone to practice their skills. Should the aspiring DJ wish to showcase his or her skills in public, more, and sometimes different, equipment will be required.

Anyone purchasing DJ equipment should first consider exactly what he or she intends to do with it. DJ mixers, for example, come in numerous styles. The competition or battle DJ will want to select a mixer with inputs for two turntables and a microphone input. Battle DJ mixers should have outputs for an external amplifier and for a recording device. Some DJ mixers come equipped with samplers, which is a nice tool to have on a set. A mobile DJ, spinning wedding receptions, parties or karaoke, will want to have more inputs for additional microphones. Also, additional inputs so the DJ can accommodate different music formats, such as mp3 or CD. Another consideration when selecting a DJ mixer is to choose one with equalizers for each of the mixer's channels which allows the DJ, no matter the style, to fine tune his or her sound.

The battle DJ is going to be spinning vinyl, so turntables are an imperative part of his or her DJ equipment. Club DJs and mobile DJs in particular need to be more versatile. These DJs are likely to be playing a lot of digitally formatted music. DJ CD players are not the same as most people have connected to their home sound system. Some professional DJ CD players have the look of turntables.

Of course, there are other options; two tabletop CD players with a mixer and a PA sound system covers most of the DJ equipment required by a mobile DJ. Pro DJ CD players provide a DJ with the versatility of being able to play music in mp3 format, and many models permit scratching, sampling and programming. Individual DJ CD players are expensive, and cost anywhere between $600 and $2500.

The only other consideration for mobile DJ equipment would be a lighting system. Again, this type of DJ equipment is expensive, and is usually reserved for professionals. Indeed, many mobile DJs will rent lighting when a gig requires it, and then add the expense to their fee. A lighting system may also require a controller in order to work in tandem with a DJ's sound system.

No matter what an individuals intentions are when purchasing DJ equipment, he or she will need to practice to become skilled in the DJ arts. Selecting the right DJ equipment for the style of DJ one aspires to be will ease the frustration involved with learning the craft. However, the best DJ equipment in the world will not make anyone into a spin artist, particularly if the gear is allowed to collect dust.
