Cheap DVD Players: Portable, Car, Sony, Panasonic And HD DVD Players

There was once a time when people had to congregate in public to watch a film, via drive-ins or movie theaters. Eventually, those with enough money could screen movies at their own leisure thanks to television, VCR and Betamax. In today's world, movies are most commonly watched at home on DVD players, which in turn are slowly being replaced with High Definition, or HD DVD players. Also, it is no longer necessary to watch the latest blockbuster hit in the living room: portable DVD players make it easy to watch DVDs anywhere, even in the car. With all the available choices, it can still be simple to navigate through the world of DVD players.

Before purchasing DVD players, it is important to consider the television with which it will be used. A HD DVD player only works with an HD TV. Even then, there are two different formats to choose from which are not compatible with one another, HD DVD and Blu-Ray. Of course, there is always the option of using a regular DVD player on an HD television without sacrificing picture quality.

Since HD is the way of the future, many reviewers do not bother with covering standard DVD players anymore. This is unfortunate, but luckily Consumer Reports and a few others still review these kinds of DVD players. There are numerous brands to consider when reviewing DVD players for purchase. Some of the well-known ones are Sony, Philips and Panasonic; but lately lesser known brands such as DVP and OPPO have topped the lists.

In August 2007, Consumer Search compiled a list of the best HD DVD players according to numerous reviewers. The one that came on top was OPPO DV-970HD, priced at $150. It is compatible with DVDs from the U.S., Europe and Asia and is one of the least expensive amongst the region-free DVD players. Other OPPO models made the list as well. Philips and Sony made the cut with consideration of their quality at low prices.

Fortunately, the prices for DVD players has gone down due to the influx of Blu-Ray and HD DVD players. Standard DVD players can be bought rather cheaply, as low as $40. A lot of the newer ones are touting numerous capabilities, such as the Panasonic DVD-F87K for $125. It plays both DVDs and CDs, and also reads MP3, WMA and JPEG files. It has a five-disc capacity and comes in black or silver. This model allows the discs to randomly play and continues playing one disc while the other four are changed.

As noted earlier, there are portable DVD players as well. These are a great idea for long car trips or airplane rides. The top seven brands according to About.com include Philips, Panasonic, Toshiba, Sony and Mustek. The Philips PET824/37 ranked number one overall and has an 8.5-inch screen with up to six hours of playback on its rechargeable battery. This particular model can cost around $180, but cheaper portable DVD players can be bought at major consumer stores such as Wal-Mart and Target.

The world of movies has changed a lot since its conception. People now have the convenience of owning their favorite films and watching them at their leisure. That can now be in the comfort of ones own home, driving in a car, or flying in the air. A current upheaval is taking place between standard DVD players and HD, but for now both are options for the consumer to decide upon. Of course, once a format has switched there is always the possibility a new one will come out.
